Hysplex

The hysplex was a device used in ancient Greece during athletic competitions, so as to prevent the false start of runners. It was a barrier placed in front of the starting line, running parallel to it. It consisted of two vertical posts integrated into wooden mechanisms, wedged into sockets cut in marble bases, with two horizontal ropes, at the athletes’ knee and abdomen level respectively.

The starter stood behind the contestants inside a shallow shaft. By pulling the rope to unlatch the posts, these fell abruptly to the ground producing a sharp sound enabling the start of the race.
