Attic red-figure bell krater depicting scenes from the palaestra

On the vase’s obverse, two young naked athletes, one holding a strigil, and the other an aryballos, run towards their bearded trainer, who stands on the right holding a rod with a curved leafy tip. The stockier athlete with the aryballos turns back his head as if addressing his fellow athlete. Their trainer wears a himation and a headband around his hair. On the vase’s reverse, two mantle youths, the one on the right-leaning on a staff, converse near a low column, an iconographic motif also referring to the palaestra.
