Panathenaic amphora
On one side is portrayed Athena Promachos turning left, carrying a shield that features the gorgoneion as episemon (insignia). She wears sumptuous chiton, ependytes (outer garment) and aegis. She is surrounded by columns upon which rest cockerels. Next to the left column, from top to bottom, is inscribed the agonistic inscription τῶν Ἀθήνηθεν ἄθλων. On the other side, a boys’ wrestling scene is depicted. Near the two contestants stands the brabeus, who acts as a judge, wearing himation, holding his characteristic stick.

- Provenance: Found in Athens “inside a garden, along the Sacred Way” probably in 1833.
