Attic black-figure pyxis depicting a chariot race

Around the body of the vase seven chariots are speeding to the right. Their charioteers wearing the typical garment of the charioteers –a long white chiton– are leaning forward, urging their horses with the reins and the kentron (whip) to intensify their effort. The striving of the horses, which are depicted in full gallop outstretching their front legs, is evident from their stretched necks, their waving manes and their half-open mouths.

Chariot racing was one of the most difficult and expensive events of the games, but also one of the most dangerous, as accidents were frequent. One such accident is depicted here: the eighth quadriga has been overturned, dragging the unfortunate charioteer to the ground. The broken and shattered parts of the chariot have been scattered on the ground, while the frightened horses have turned in the opposite direction.
